Still waiting for cox@home to come into my area. they promised end of the year, now looking more like Summer 1999. There is a demo today of 100X faster service at the mall today. I will be glad to add to win royalty stream if the are a part of @home venture.

Cable modem service has been available here since November 5 via GCI! GCI recommends the COM21 cable modem, which uses VxWorks. GCI brags we will have the best internet service in the country after their new undersea cable comes on line early next year.

Alaska is getting seriously wired, with two new competing undersea cables that will provide vast bandwidth. Fiber has been laid along the railroad to Fairbanks, and along the pipeline to Prudhoe Bay.

Economists are shaking their heads over this apparent over-capacity. What will people do with all of this bandwidth? It'll be interesting to see how fast it gets soaked up. Business will use it for video-conferencing. Engineers in Houston will use it to monitor oil-wells on the North Slope. I'll be able call home on Mother's Day without getting a busy signal.

And if all goes as planned, next March I'll post some online pictures of the start of the Iditarod sled dog race, taken with the new Kodak digital camera I'm shopping for...
