Re: "I think there will be "surprises" on both the Katmai technology and marketing fronts."

As far as the technology is concerned, since Intel has already told us all about it, why will there be any surprises? We already know the throughput, and it isn't significantly better than 3dNow. The only surprise may be increased L1 cache size (similar to what Intel did with the P55C vs. the P54C), which will certainly help, but will still put Katmai behind K6-3 in performance (and certainly behind K7).

As far as marketing, well, consumers have also learned from their MMX mistakes (rushing out to buy useless MMX chips for no reason). I expect people will be more skeptical with Katmai. In any case, Intel is at the mercy of Microsoft's DirectX7 release, and since MSFT and INTC aren't the best of friends right now, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some "accidental" delays on the Microsoft end. <GGG>

Joey - Re: ". Intel has also said recently the Katmai launch will be
associated with the biggest marketing blitz in their history, tauting Katmai-optimized software, the Internet, etc. "

This actually surprises me.

Intel would have to be far more confident in the available Katmai-Specific software titles/applications that will be available - and their performance boost - when the Katmai launch takes place.

We'll know in about 3 months.
