Windows 2000 Beta 3 On
Schedule
(12/05/98, 1:21 p.m. ET)
By Stuart Glascock, Computer Reseller News

Microsoft still plans to release Beta 3 of Windows
2000, formerly known as Windows NT 5.0, during the
first quarter of 1999, a Microsoft spokesperson said
Thursday after BetaNews.com told its
developer-intensive audience to expect the
long-awaited beta in February.

Beta 3 promises to be a major sign of progress for the
long-delayed operating system. Microsoft released Beta
2 on Aug. 19 when the operating system was still called
Windows NT 5.0 Server, Windows NT 5.0 Server
Enterprise Edition, and Windows NT Workstation 5.0.
An interim release was distributed to beta testers at a
Professional Developers Conference in Denver on Oct.
15.

On Oct. 27, Microsoft renamed the product line.
Windows NT Workstation and Server became
Windows 2000 Professional and Server, respectively.
Windows NT Server Enterprise Edition became
Windows 2000 Advanced Server. A new, 64-bit
version called Windows 2000 Datacenter is expected
to be available within 60 days after Windows 2000
ships.

At the time of the name change, Microsoft officials said
they planned to ship Beta 3 in the first quarter and the
finished product in 1999.

Thus MSFT will have a patent on nothing, which in the computer age will be worth a fortune.

Only if they can sell it over the internet...
