Colin, I'm not sure why you're trying to make a pissing contest out of this discussion. I've not made any claims for any specific ISP, including the one I consult for. I will disagree vehemently about your unqualified assertion that ALL tier 1 providers are ALWAYS the best. I've not heard any factual or background information from you that would qualify you to make this statement. Tell me, if I dialed into a tier 1 dialup provider who had a fantastic backbone service, but their modem pool sucked, wouldn't you still be getting crappy service? If the pool you dial into has ringers or a flaky modem (so that you can't connect reliably, or you get low-speed, error-prone connections), wouldn't this expose you just as much? As far as trading thousands, perhaps for a living, I would assert that the dialup service issue is a total red herring. For a few hundred dollars per month, you can get a 56K frame relay (or point to point) connection that will perform better than any dialup, has lower latency, and is far more reliable (and is up 24X7).
