Digisel,New Business to Business E-Commerce Launches Today
by: hlpinout

DEC 7, 1998, M2 Communications - One of the first dedicated business to business e-commerce site in the UK goes live today. The on-line business service ( www.digisel.com) has been to offer fast and easy to use, one-stop shopping for corporate buyers. They can instantly compare models and prices of a wide range of goods and services. Currently these cover 12,000 computers and peripherals, 800,000 low cost airfares and the latest Compaq handheld, laptop and desktop
computers. Additional services, including package holidays, will be available from the site over the course of the next few months.

The service has been developed over the last three years with the help of London-based Abacus Software. The site is hosted by Abacus, whose other high-profile Web site clients include Metal
Bulletin plc, the Local Government Association, IPC and Centaur Communications.

A major endorsement for the new site has come from Compaq, the world's leading supplier of PCs, who has appointed digisel.com as an authorised reseller. Compaq's latest PCs and upgrades can be bought through digisel.com. Compaq's main rival, Dell, claims to sell in excess of ?500,000's worth of computers a day on the Web.

Some of the biggest savings can be found in the 'virtual warehouse' of electronic products which includes computers, printers, software and components. Discounts of more than 50% can be found, a feat made possible by a combination of low overheads for e-commerce related activities and strong commercial relationships with some of the world's leading manufacturers.

Roy Assersohn is founder and chairman of Digisel. He has a strong pedigree in on-line information and trading systems. Ten years ago he developed a major on-line network in the UK and US with the backing of Cable & Wireless and one of the largest insurance companies in the US.

"The digisel.com on-line service is unique in that it has been developed specifically as a business-to-business e-commerce site." Said Mr. Assersohn, "We do not believe that a database-driven service of this size with such a range of tightly targeted products exists anywhere else on the Web."

"Digisel's policy is to provide an easy-to-use, fast and omprehensive on-line information and purchasing service for the business user. Computers, peripherals and low-cost airfares are just the start. There is a real gap in the market for a one-stop on-line store for all business needs, which digisel.com is designed to plug."

Assersohn's experience has been used to overcome the traditional problems with on-line systems, such as lack of information, navigation difficulties and long delays. "The efficiency of the site has been recognised by Compaq with the award of their reseller status," said Assersohn.

Users can access large amounts of information, make instant comparisons on products and prices and then make immediate purchases. All orders are processed and delivered by Digisel, with the
airline tickets being handled by an authorised ATOL/ABTA agent.

E-commerce in the UK is generally recognised to be about two years behind the US, but with major growth prospects. A survey conducted by KPMG of the one hundred biggest businesses in Britain (with minimum sales of ?200 m a year) showed that about 3% on average was being
conducted electronically. In three years time, it is forecast that this will be around 20
