But seriously, my guess about the first part, off the top of my head, would be that atheists are usually people who have thought matters through in some way that takes life seriously (since they have usually, though not in my case, actively cast off the label they were raised with); and the sort of individuals who do that are less liable to behave in ways that will require them to live in prison.

It's also true that the higher up the educational ladder you go, the more likely, statistically, you are to be an atheist. And well educated people are not the ones who are the most likely to end up behind bars.

The explanation for why we are perceived as the evil ones (another total off-the-topof-my-head guess) may lie in the psychology of scapegoating. There is a whole literature on scapegoating, how scapegoats are chosen. Or maybe in the psychology of disliking the messenger who brings bad tidings. The reasons they think it is bad tidings we bring are so complex...
