Well, Alex--or should I call you Lather now?--cigars may be very honest, but you do know that they cause wretched mouth and throat cancers, don't you? I must say that I enjoy the smell of them, because when I was a tiny girl my grandfather smoked them, with me on his knee. He used to give me the cigar rings to wear, and I pretended I was some sort of exotic princess. However, there are some people who smoke them who are still under the misapprehension that they are not carcinogenic, and indeed they are. I cited the disease figures here last year, and would be happy to try to find them again if anyone is curious.

Speaking of smoking, a new UCSF Study which is to be published in today's edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association is very interesting. Fifty-three San Francisco bartenders were included, and their incidence of respiratory problems in several categories was drastically decreased within the two months after the ban went into effect on January 1.

Of course, most bar employees would apparently still prefer to work in smoky death houses, because their tips are better. Still, the state has a viable interest in workplace safety issues, for the benefit of the public health.
