It is possible that MSFT may end up in the role of providing the enabling software on the front-end for PCs and servers and move out of the backend processing business altogether. I believe this is the way that MSFT and ORCL (two rivals who hate and distrust one another) play together in a number of areas. They in essence have lost at this point, have created TP and given much of the control to Citi who is universally distrusted by the rest of the banking community. CKFR aligning with ORCL seems like the last step in the market consolidation process in e-pay. e-bill on the other hand seems to still be wild and wooly with several upstarts fighting to get a piece of that market including CYCH.

MSFT had FDC in the loop for the customer service and processing end of things and apparently they were not up to the task. The customer support for this type of primarily service-driven business is a HUGE challenge.
