Nokia delivers HSCSD solution to Hongkong Telecom for advanced GSM data services December 7, 1998) - Nokia and Hongkong Telecom have signed an agreement for the delivery of its High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) solution, enabling the introduction of advanced mobile data services in Hongkong Telecom's GSM network. HCSCD technology is a new feature of the GSM system. The solution boosts data speeds from the current 9.6. kbit/s to 14.4 kbit/s in a single traffic channel and using multiplexing techniques operators will be able to offer data rates up to 57.6 kbit/s - six times faster than currently available. With help of compression technology, data speed can be increased even higher. A high data transmission speed makes it possible to transmit live images through GSM networks. "We will make use of our dual band network and the High Speed Data equipment from Nokia to develop mobile data services and pave the way for personal multimedia. A mobile banking service to be launched in the first quarter of next year is expected to be the first innovation adopting the HSCSD technology," says Ross Cormack, Managing Director, Hongkong Telecom Mobile Services. "The agreement we signed today is a continuation of our long-term relationship, which began in 1983. Hongkong Telecom launched their dual band network supplied by Nokia in November," says Mike Mulvey, Managing Director, Nokia Telecommunications, Hong Kong. "We see that data will play a significant role in future mobile communications, HSCSD serves as an important step for operators to expand their data service offerings." (We missed this from last Friday)Telekom Cellular and Nokia sign agreement for delivery of complete GSM 1800 cellular network in Malaysia (December 4, 1998) - Nokia and Telekom Cellular have signed a contract for the supply of a complete GSM 1800 mobile network for Telekom Cellular, one of the leading mobile operators in Malaysia, part of the Telekom Malaysia group. The multiyear contract is valued at over USD 50 million. Installation of the network will begin immediately in high density areas of Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor area. The agreement includes Nokia's Mobile Switching Centres, Home Location Registers, Base Station Controllers, Base Stations and the Nokia Network Management System. "With this addition to our digital network, TMTOUCH's customers will benefit in terms of wider network coverage as well as the introduction of the latest value-added services," said Mr. Wan Muhamad Wan Ibrahim, CEO of Telekom Cellular.
