The corruption in a liberal government is not only the politicians but the many people who cheat to get benefits. Most of the welfare programs are riddled with fraud. People crossing the border to get free health care and filing fake returns for earned income tax credit refunds. IRS estimated 25% of EITC to be fraudulent. Not to mention the people who hide assets to collect Welfare and Medicaid. It's so bad that most of the leading politicians are tax cheats: Clinton, Gingrich, Gephardt, Clinton, Rostenkowski, Foley, Wright, Moseley-Braun, Clinton, etc.

What is a dog bites man story, David? All I'm arguing here, futilely as usual, is that the Espy verdict seems consistent with the law as it currently stands. No jury nullification, no "DC jury" bias. The prosecution didn't prove its case, according to the interpretation of the appeals court in the Sun Diamond conviction. Do you think there should have been "jury nullification" in the other direction, and the jury should have convicted even if there was no evidence of specific actions taken because of the payoffs? Yes, money is a corrupting influence in politics. What do you propose doing about it? My neighbor and Senator Russ Feingold was advocating one approach, for his trouble his opponent got a lot of soft money from the Republican National Senate committee. Campaign finance reform faces the same kind of tricky legal hurdles that lead to Espy's acquittal. Do you deny that campaign financing has a corrupting effect on politics?
