AMD targets flash chips
costing $1 per Mbyte
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--Advanced Micro Devices Inc. here today announced the development of an advanced NAND-based flash memory technology to pursue mass storage applications. AMD said its technology provides a higher level of reliability that enables NAND flash to be used for code storage.

AMD said its UltraNAND technology combines a smaller cell size with a simplified manufacturing process to offer the highest densities at a lower cost per bit over standard NOR or multi-level cell NOR flash devices. Consequently, AMD expects the technology to break the $1-per-megabyte price barrier in the year 2000.

The first product using the UltraNAND technology will be a 64-Mbit flash, designated Am30LV0064. Samples of the 64-Mbit chip are now available with production slated to begin in the first quarter 1999. Pricing has been set at $18.85 each in quantities of 10,000.

"AMD's UltraNAND technology is a breakthrough in comparison to other NAND technologies," declared Walid Maghribi, group vice president of AMD's memory group. "It is the most reliable, cost-effective flash memory technology for ultra-high density applications."

The company said its technology produces flash memories with error-free operation for greater than 100,000 program/erase cycles without the need for error correction. The data will be retained for 10 years.

MH...When a post is made to A/R the contra account normally is Sales. EG..when Nintendo ships a container of consoles Nintendo incurs an obligation to pay and RMBS a legal right to receive payment. The sales date is normally the ship date so any product shipped by Nintendo this quarter would show up as a sale on RMBS books this quarter as well. When Nintendo actually pays is irrelevant though I would imagine payment is secured with a letter of credit at Nintendo's bank.
