Another point about competition is that Microsoft has a huge hole in it's software product line - the front end of business software like Invoicing, AR, payroll etc. MS BackOffice provides some base technology but they don't have anything like Intuit's QuickBooks on the low end or SAP on the high end.

While Checkfree probably has an in with QuickBooks, I'd like to see some more announcements from other higher-end application vendors in the business-to-business or business-to-consumer payment processing area. Going to the top, a deal with a company like SAP would really cement Checkfree's position.

Personal Financial Management Software

Lost Branding Opportunities

What is at stake here is nothing less than the consumer touchpoint and branding. Consider the sequence of events that the biller's customer goes through when they pay using a PFM software solution.

These systems are heavily branded software solutions. From the time the consumer launches the application to the point of submitting the electronic check, the PFM's branding is dominant.

In this scenario, the biller has no opportunity to brand, cross-sell or communicate with the consumer. Like the other systems, PFMs create the following lost opportunities:

•Lost communication opportunities •Lost cross-selling opportunities
