Fibre channel. ... <<Open Microsystems Enables Tape Sharing for ADSM in Storage Area Networks AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 7, 1998--Open Microsystems Inc., a subsidiary of Gresham Computing Plc., today announced it has successfully enabled IBM's ADSTAR Distributed Storage Management (ADSM) software to allow tape drive sharing in a Fibre Channel Storage Area Network (SAN). ADSM is designed for backup and archival of data in enterprise environments. Open Microsystems' Enterprise DistribuTAPE software allows multiple ADSM servers to dynamically share a pool of tape drives and robotic libraries, either over a conventional network or in a SAN environment. When a SAN is employed, all tape drives are accessible at Fibre Channel speeds (up to 100 megabytes per second) to all enabled servers. The Enterprise DistribuTAPE software provides a shared interface to the services of a robotic tape library, provides the necessary device locking and access control to enable device sharing, and also provides the necessary device drivers to enable shared device access over either a Fibre Channel SAN or a conventional TCP/IP network. Dynamic device sharing provides for improved resource utilization and reduced waiting for tape mounts. "Although the required hardware components are now available for Fibre Channel connectivity, realizing the potential of SAN requires applications that can dynamically share resources," said Mark Roberts, director of services for Open Microsystems. "Our Enterprise DistribuTAPE software fills this void for backup and archival solutions which employ ADSM. We anticipate announcing more real SAN solutions over the coming months." Fibre Channel technology improves performance, flexibility and redundancy of tape and disk subsystems. The Enterprise DistribuTAPE software currently supports ADSM version 3 under AIX and Solaris, with StorageTek tape automation systems (either mainframe or open systems attachment.)
