Good point, Ed. I'm partial to ADSL myself, having invested in Amati, the company that developed DMT (Discrete Multitone Technology) which seems to be the way the telcos are going if they can just figure out a way to get their tariff-minded heads out of their collective asses and realize that $30-40 is the magical price range that will bring them the economies of scale that will create a gusher of recurring subscription fees for them. Jeez, man. One of AXC's neighbor at Redwood City is @Home which is doing quite well but, as I understand it, cable modems use a shared network architecture which means that the more people use cable modems, the slower the connection. @Home, for example, recently put a limit on the number of broadcast quality video streams that a user can download because it was threatening to crash the entire system!! (I'll post that article here sometime) The achilles heel of cable modems seem to be the highly leveraged balance sheets of the cable guys. I'm skeptical if ATT's purchase of TCI can a) change that industrywide and b) change the shared network character of cable modems. This brings us right back to our friendly neighborhood telcos ran by people, who Andy Grove derisively described as never even having operated a successful lemonade stand when they were kids.
