Microsoft finds Year 2000 problem in
Windows 98

REDMOND, Wash., Dec 7 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp.
(Nasdaq:MSFT - news) said on Monday it found a Year 2000 problem in its popular Windows 98
computer operating system and has issued an update to correct it.

The company said the problem was a minor one which might result in the incorrect display of dates
but posed no risk of data loss or computer damage. Nevertheless, the finding was one more sign that
not even the leading high-tech companies, let alone thouands of other small businesses, had rooted
out all potential ''millennium bug'' problems.

''Microsoft understands the critical nature of the Year 2000 issue and is committed to diligently
testing its products and promptly providing information and solutions to its customers if issues do
arise,'' Rich Kaplan, director of the company's platforms infrastructure group, said in a statement. He
said the Windows 98 glitch had been discovered in the course of ongoing tests of its products.

The Year 2000 problem, associated with computers' inability to correctly read the date after the
start of the next millennium, threatens to cause a range of computers and computer-based products
to malfunction.
