<<should I forget my plans to go with Datek? >>

Sad to say (please do not take it personally) that if you do this, you actually do your own a favor as well as all the current Datek customers a favor. The fact is: Datek servers, every single one of them, are already too over-crowded. The more new customers sign on, the slower of their servers will be.

I think all the Current Datek customers should start a petition to DEMAND Datek stop recruiting new customers before they can add significant number of new servers, and CLOSE all the current Datek customers' accounts who have no funds in them but only use Datek's free real quote service and the free Streamer service. There is no other way to quick-fix their server problems.

That's my conclusion. Datek has only $2.28 of my money
left (plus, of course, whatever might come of the
so-far-non-existent November interest payment). If
and when that ever hits, I will request a final check
(but under NO circumstances a wire transfer) and will
be outta here. Actually they're welcome to the two bucks,
but I DON'T want to accumulate any future interest
payments. Heck, I already get an account statement every
month for my wife's long-since closed account with a
9-cent credit balance. Guess I'll ask for a check for that
too. Last of the big-time wheeler dealers <gggg>.

Good luck, all. I admire your fortitude. Me no got-um
no more, no more. It used to be fun, but now it ain't.

Regards,

Spots

Everyone has had problems with Datek, some worse than others. I find that I can trade in and out of stocks pretty quickly if I can enter my order. I do try to avoid trading during the first 30 minutes since the servers are usually slow then. With low volume and very fast moving stocks I've had my limit order not execute even as the market moved through my limit, but there really is no guarantee that your order will be executed.

I've also tried to trade at E*Trade and they are really slow unless they make a market in the stock you are trading. Otherwise, limit orders rarely execute until the bid (ask) hits your limit if you are selling (buying), effectively turning your limit order into a market order.

Overall, I've been pretty happy with my ability to trade at Datek - when the servers are not busy order entry and trade executions are quick, but when the servers are really busy you can forget about it. What I'd like is for the interface to allow changing an order - that would take precious seconds off of order entry (instead of canceling an existing order and then entering a new order).
