Why is it so quiet? Last time it got to 90 someone sneezed and it crashed to 30.

>For such a huge move today this thread is like a tomb! What is going on??? ASND up almost $7, and no news.

regarding TLAB, for what it's worth, reuters says it's still buoyed by the possibility of a sprint contract announcement.

how's this for ASND's spike? ATM must be the word of the day ...

FRONTIER DEPLOYS FASTEST ATM NETWORK IN INDUSTRY

Business Wire
December 7, 1998, 11:31 a.m. PT
Business/Technology Editors

ROCHESTER, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 7, 1998--Frontier
Communications continues to set the pace of innovation in the
communications industry by deploying the fastest Asynchronous Transfer
Mode (ATM) network available today.

Using switches purchased from Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:
ASND), Frontier is transmitting its ATM traffic at 2.5 Gigabits per
second (Gbps) directly over Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing
(DWDM) equipment. That's 16 times faster than the typical ATM
technology currently in use.

"This isn't something we're promising to do in the future -- we're
doing it now. The ATM layer of the Frontier Optronics Network(SM) is
already lit and carrying traffic at incredible speeds," said Michael
Coghill, Frontier's vice president of network operations. "Let me try
to put the impact of this announcement into perspective with an
analogy. If you think of traditional networks moving at 65 miles per
hour, Frontier's ATM highway raises the speed limit to 3,000 miles per
hour. Thanks to Frontier, network congestion may well become a thing
of the past."

"Ascend is pleased to partner with such an innovative service
provider as Frontier," said Thomas DeCanio, vice president of Ascend's
product marketing core switching division. "By connecting Ascend GX
550 ATM switches directly to DWDM at OC-48/STM-16 speeds, thereby
eliminating an entire layer of traditional transmission equipment,
Frontier is deploying the most efficient network architecture possible
at the fastest ATM speeds available."

The Frontier Optronics Network already moves data at OC-48 rates
(2.5 Gbps) over its coast-to-coast Internet Protocol (IP) network
layer. Frontier has also created a "network express lane," deploying
Hyper-Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (HDWDM) equipment in its
top 20 markets. HDWDM can move traffic at speeds of 1.28 terabits
(trillions) of data per second on a single fiber strand. This ability
to transmit trillions of bits of data, instead of the billions carried
by conventional optical technology, makes the Frontier Optronics
Network the fastest in the world.

About Frontier Communications

Frontier Communications, a unit of Frontier Corporation
(NYSE:FRO), is one of the leading providers of integrated
communications solutions -- including Internet, IP and data

Ascend, Networking Shares Rise on Optimism for Demand
Bloomberg News
December 7, 1998, 4:48 p.m. PT

Alameda, California, Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- The shares of Ascend Communications Inc., Cisco Systems Inc. and other network-equipment makers rose amid optimism that phone companies and businesses will buy more of their products to link computers.

Ascend, based in Alameda, California, surged 6 7/8 to 63 15/16, its highest close in almost two years. San Jose, California-based Cisco, the No. 1 maker of networking gear, climbed 1 15/16 to a record 80 3/16.

Phone companies are racing to upgrade old networks or build up new ones to handle the growing popularity of the Internet and mushrooming demand from corporations for data transmission. At the same time, businesses are looking to install more networking gear to route data between departments or even to computers at branch offices in other countries.

"There are expectations that network spending is going to accelerate from 1998 levels," said Paul Sagawa, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co.

Other network-equipment makers also rose. 3Com Corp. climbed to a 13-month high of 44 3/8 before closing at 44 1/4, up 1 1/4. Xylan Corp. rose 7/16 to 21 5/8.

Ascend got a further boost from speculation that it may be taken over. Analysts said a purchase of Ascend by Lucent Technologies Inc., the No. 1 phone-equipment maker and an oft-mentioned suitor, could be more viable now, with Lucent up 4 1/4 at 100.

Craig Johnson, principal market researcher with Pita Group, said the higher that Lucent stock rises, the easier it would be to swap for Ascend shares.

"They would have to put less on the table," he said.

Ascend and Lucent declined to comment.
