Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the populations of most of the first world countries stabilizing? I thought that most of Europe (with occasional exceptions like Ireland) along with USA, Australia, are experiencing relatively little population growth, and Japan even has too few young people for its needs. The main sources of world population growth are third world countries like India and Nigeria. It would seem that modernization leads to violation of the biological trend that you stated - "A biological population will always grow to exceed the food supply"
