LANSING -- As the controversial issue of new tribal casinos heads for a showdown in the Legislature as early as today, Michigan Indians are receiving a boost from an influential ally.

Michael Dettmer, the Grand Rapids-based U.S. attorney for western Michigan, said the Department of Justice should file a lawsuit against the state if the Legislature fails to approve the agreements that four tribes negotiated in 1995 and 1997 with Gov.John Engler.
