First, I'd like to start adopting your newly coined term "broadbad".

I'm sure it was just a typo, and I would never think of making fun of that, but you have to admit that the term broadbad is an apt description in some cases.

Second, the 640 kb/s gateway at the home network interface in no way alleviates the congestion at the NAP or other bottlenecks. On the contrary, it makes it worse. This is the whole argument with ADSL, where you get supposedly "dedicated" bandwidth as high as 6 Mb/s in some claims. If the backbone networks are not set up to support that bandwidth from multiple users and the DSLAMs are not engineered correctly, then all the bandwidth at the user interface won't do a thing for you.
