The market is wild - stocks going up for no reason. Here is what I found in Sreet.com about asnd today :

Ascend's (ASND:Nasdaq) jump this afternoon shows that
the mirth continues in the communications-equipment
sector. No solid fundamental news was at work. The stock
popped 6 15/16, or 12.2%, to an annual high of 63 15/16.

"It's just a speculative frenzy that hits Ascend every once in
a while," says one money manager who owns shares of both
Ascend and Lucent (LU:NYSE), a dominant builder of
telephone networks. Ascend makes equipment for the
Internet.

"We keep scratching our heads on this," he says. Earlier
this fall it seemed that the communications-equipment
suppliers were bracing for a slowdown; today a few signs
have improved and the bulls are getting pretty worked up. It
doesn't take much -- investors pushed up Lucent stock on
Friday simply because executives said they expect to meet
profit expectations next year.

Part of the long-running speculation is that Lucent will
acquire Ascend to cement its position in the Internet
business. Tonight an Ascend spokesman flatly denied that
any deal is in the works. "There's no M&A activity"
underway, he said.
