Where did you get that info. Not saying its not true in some PC designs. But There is no technical reason other than bad logic design that should be the case. There should no performance penalty for properly designed ECC ciruitry. I wont go into the details of why I think ECC, Parity, Using BIST ciruits on embedded memories, and why testing memories is the single most important thing you can do. I do think use should always use ECC or Parity if possible. If you really want to learn more on the subject of why its so important read "Testing Semiconductor Memories" by A.J. Van De Goor. ISBN-0471925861. Van De Goor is one of the worlds foremost authorities of the subject and wrote this ground breaking book. I had the pleasure of having him teach a 5 day class on the subject at my employer and was tremendously helpful and knowledgeable individual. A more recent work on the subject can be found in....
