X,

I'm thinking less of the political division of the former Soviet Union than of the descent into political and economic chaos that has taken over in the Russian heartland.

I don't know what percentage of the population of the former Soviet Union was Russian, but certainly Russia made up the vast majority of the landmass. China's ethnic minorities, particularly the Muslims in Xinjiang, cover percentage of China's territory that is somewhat greater than their population. Interesting to see what will happen there. So far China's tactic of liberalizing the economy while retaining strict political control has been reasonably viable, but at some point the pressure for political liberalization will start to grow. We'll see what happens. I just hope we don't try to direct what happens; for better or for worse, it is and will probably continue to be beyond our control.

Steve
