Drop In PC Shipments To Asia Was Less Than Expected In 3rd Quarter

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -(Dow Jones)- International Data Corp. Monday
reported preliminary data that indicates third-quarter personal-computer
shipments in the Asia/Pacific region fell, but the drop wasn't as bad as
expected, indicating improved market conditions for the fourth quarter
into 1999.
The technology market-research firm said PC shipments in the
Asia/Pacific region, excluding Japan, fell to 2.56 million units, down
2.3% from a year ago but better than the 3.1% decline the organization
forcasted.
International Data forecasts a 5% increase in fourth quarter PC
shipments from a year ago, and a 16% increase in regional PC shipments
in 1999 compared with 1998, which is expected to report a 1% decline.
The stronger-than-expected third-quarter results combined with the
strengthening currency and stock markets is a positve indication for the
regional PC market, International Data said.
The organization said Intel Corp.'s (INTC) outlook of increased
demand in the fourth quarter for PC products in all market segments and
geographies also gives credence to prospects for a regional PC market
revival.
