Nikkei ends higher on Dow, easing of SQ worries
By Keiko Takagi

TOKYO, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Tokyo stocks trimmed early gains but ended Tuesday trade in positive territory against the backdrop of an overnight rally in New York shares and receding supply concerns ahead of Friday's settlement of special quotations (SQ) of futures and options, traders said.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average closed up 84.71 points or 0.58 percent at 14,808.20. Nikkei December futures were flat at 14,760.

''An easing of concerns that SQ might shake the market provided support,'' said Mamoru Otani, general manager at Daiwa Securuties.

Investors have smoothly rolled over their positions from the December to March contract, which has eased concern about supply following the SQ on Friday, they said.

The Nikkei stock average pared early gains as unwinding cross shareholdings gathered force ahead of the close amid a dearth of fresh buying incentives, the traders said.

High-tech issues were bought following a rally in New York shares.

''As a result of New York's rally, high-techs such as Advantest and Hitachi, which had been sold off recently, took back some ground and brightened the mood,'' said Masatoshi Sato, a manager at Kankaku Securities Co Ltd.

Advantest Corp , a maker of measuring instruments and semiconductors, was up 190 yen at 7,740. Hitachi Ltd was up 31 at 723.

Yoshio Inamura, assistant general manager at Tokyo-Mitsubishi Asset Management Ltd, said: ''Although fundamentals remain bleak, foreigners hunt for selected firms whose earnings are expected to recover under their aggressive restructuring plans.''

Inamura said those companies include Toshiba Corp . Toshiba was up 12 yen at 676.

He added that the topside appeared heavy.

The market reacted little to a monthly report released by the Economic Planning Agency on Tuesday.

The report said although the economy is still in a prolonged slump and conditions remain extremely severe, there are subtle signs of improvement.

Volume was moderate, with 356 million shares traded on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE), against 240 million shares on Monday.

Joe, I bought some BBA when you mentioned it as I also think it is undervalued. But, you can shop on their website. I don't know why you think it isn't open yet?
