COTAS Selects Newbridge Networks to Build South America's First Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Multi-Services Network KANATA, ONTARIO--Network Enables Delivery of Value-Added Services to Customers in Bolivia's Fastest Growing Economic Center Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN - news; TSE: NNC - news) today announced that it has been selected by COTAS (Cooperativa de Telecommunicaciones de Santa Cruz Ltda.), a rapidly growing telecommunications service provider located in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, to build South Amer ica's first asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) multi-services network. The high-performance networking solution offers COTAS' customers, which include financial and healthcare institutions, other telecommunications companies and retail and utility companie s, the capability to deliver competitive, value-added voice and data services to the more than one million residents of Santa Cruz - Bolivia's fastest growing economic center. These services include: Internet access, e-mail, electronic file exchange and electronic commerce. The Newbridge(r) solution, which offers frame relay, time division multiplexing (TDM) and local area network (LAN) interconnection, has been designed to support exploding customer demand for high-quality, bandwidth-intensive data services driven by Boliv ia's prosperous economy. ''The Newbridge multi-services platform completely satisfies our clients' needs,'' said Fernando Hevia, Data Network Manager, COTAS. ''Proof of that is the high customer demand for services. Our port count - the number of people who use our services - is gr owing at a pace that exceeds our expectations.'' ''The high-speed, powerful network that Newbridge has designed will ensure continued corporate growth for COTAS and its customers, and will contribute significantly to the overall health of Bolivia's national economy,'' said Giulio Gianturco, Executive Vic e President and General Manager of North and South America, Newbridge Networks. ''The network not only defines COTAS as a leading provider of network services, it serves as a model for other telecommunications companies in Boliva and elsewhere in Latin Am erica.'' COTAS selected Newbridge to build its multi-services network because of the solid working relationship and mutual trust the two companies have established, as well as the ongoing commitment and network support Newbridge provides through Comtec, a Bolivia -based Newbridge distributor. The Newbridge solution, which comprises the industry-leading Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170 Multiservices Switch, the 3600 MainStreet(r) Bandwidth Manager, and the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager, is a cost-effective, highly scalab le networking solution that is capable of centrally monitoring and managing multiple-traffic networks and provide network partitioning - a feature which sets it apart from other vendor offerings. Network partitioning enables service providers to segregat e their networks into customer-specific partitions and offer advanced-featured virtual private networks (VPNs) to their customers. The scalability and standards-based technology on which the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager is based also enable COT AS to protect its initial network investment and expand its network simply and inexpensively. ''The MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager virtually sealed the deal,'' said Mr. Hevia. ''Before the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager, there was no way in which COTAS could supervise or manage the user's link. By working with Newbridge to implement the data network, we have been able to provide a better service because it is completely manageable from our central network operations center.'' COTAS is also planning to use the ATM backbone to support voice traffic. With the deregulation of long distance services in Bolivia planned for 2001, COTAS understands that it must be prepared for what will become a fiercely competitive market. ''Currently, our service demand is 10 lines for every 100 inhabitants,'' said Mr. Hevia. ''Our objective is to have 16 lines for every 100 inhabitants by the year 2000.'' The state-of-the-art solution that Newbridge is providing will enable COTAS to proceed with confidence, knowing its network can be scaled to support demand for bandwidth-intensive services and applications both now and well into the future. The multi-ser vices capabilities of the MainStreetXpress family, for example, will be crucial when COTAS begins offering Internet Protocol (IP) Virtual Private Network services over the network infrastructure. With the addition of an Internetworking Services Card (ISC ) to the multi-services platform and the MainStreetXpress 56020 Routing Services Control Point (RSCP) policy software, COTAS can add IP routing capabilities to its network, based on the Carrier Scale Internetworking (CSI) architecture. This will provide COTAS with the flexibility to rapidly introduce value-added, revenue-generating business IP services over a common network infrastructure with minimal incremental costs.
