Compaq Leads Across All Major PC Market Categories; Number One in Worldwide and U.S. Desktop Sales
Business Wire - December 08, 1998 10:50
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 1998--Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) continues to lead the global PC industry, confirming its number one market position both worldwide and in the U.S. market in overall PC sales, server sales, and desktop sales, according to the latest estimates from International Data Corporation (IDC).

"Compaq's continued momentum in the PC market proves we are the best at providing products, solutions and services to our customers the way they want, when they want and where they want," said Enrico Pesatori, Compaq's Senior Vice President for Corporate Marketing. "We're very pleased with customer response to our products and our market leadership across all major PC categories."

On a worldwide basis, Compaq's share grew sequentially to 14.4 percent in the third quarter as the company shipped nearly 1.25 million more units than its nearest competitor. Compaq's PC market share in the U.S. grew to 15.8 percent in the third quarter from 14.4 percent in the previous quarter, while the nearest competitor saw a decline in U.S. market share.

In the desktop PC arena, Compaq led worldwide marketshare with 14.4 percent, shipping nearly one million more systems than the nearest competitor. In the U.S., Compaq's first place desktop market share was 15.6 percent, leading the category by nearly two percentage points.

In server sales, Compaq's worldwide market share of 32.2 percent was more than double the number two ranked company. In the U.S., Compaq captured 32.3 percent of the PC server market. Compaq's PC server shipment volume in the U.S. grew more than 27 percent in the quarter, resulting in a gain of more than two points of share over the second quarter. During the quarter, Compaq broadened its server line, adding new Xeon-based systems to its industry-leading lineup of servers.

In addition, Compaq shared the lead in the U.S. portables market and achieved the number one ranking in both business and government market segments both worldwide and in the U.S.

Compaq continues to build momentum in its PC business, with strong demand in the U.S. small and medium business (SMB) market with the company's new Customer Choice model. "No other company can match our ability to do business with customers the way they choose to do business," said Pesatori. "The tremendous response from customers to the new Prosignia family of desktops, portables, and servers proves the model is working." Sales of the newly introduced Prosignia line are nearly three times forecasted levels and Compaq is delivering on its commitment of shipping as fast as next day and averaging shipment in less than five business days.

"The actions we've taken in integrating the sales forces and launching a massive direct sales and marketing effort in the U.S. enable Compaq to deliver the utmost in customer choice and value," said Pesatori. "Compaq is perfectly positioned to enhance its PC market leadership as we expand our vision of standards-based computing across the entire enterprise."
