Here is the entire release. Thanks, Tom.
The fact is, only Olympus and Fuji (and Ricoh) are still clutching SmartMedia. Sony is still flogging away at the floppy disc.
People switch from SmartMedia to CF. Nobody switches from CompactFlash to SmartMedia.
Can't wait for an official announcement of the Olympus defection.
Agfa to Support CompactFlash Film Cards in New Digital Camera; Agfa Will Introduce Its First CF-Based Digital Camera At January CES Show Business Wire - December 08, 1998 10:47 Consumer Electronics Show
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 1998--SanDisk Corp. (Nasdaq:SNDK), inventor of the CompactFlash(TM) (CF(TM)) small size memory card and a founding member of the CompactFlash Association (CFA), announced today that Agfa, the world's leading provider of award-winning desktop scanners and digital cameras, will introduce its first digital camera using CompactFlash film cards on January 6, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
In the last two years, more than 55 digital cameras, produced by 26 different companies, have been introduced with slots for removable CompactFlash film cards. CompactFlash has become the global de facto film standard for digital cameras.
Patrick Pandelaers, Agfa ePhoto digital camera senior project manager, said, "SanDisk and other suppliers of CompactFlash have demonstrated that CF cards are very durable and reliable and have achieved broad acceptance among digital camera users. CompactFlash is a fine alternative for file storage in our ePhoto line of digital cameras."
Nelson Chan, SanDisk vice president of marketing, said, "Agfa produces superb digital cameras that are consistently among the most popular on the market. Its decision to switch to the CF card standard for its new digital camera is a powerful endorsement for CompactFlash.
"Agfa joins numerous other camera manufactures including Canon, Casio, Epson, Kodak, Konica, Hewlett-Packard, Minolta, Nikon, Panasonic and Polaroid who have already introduced cameras that use CompactFlash digital film cards. Minolta recently switched from SmartMedia to CompactFlash, and we believe that companies other than Agfa and Minolta will follow that trend in recognition of the clear preference of consumers."
Digital cameras previously introduced by Agfa have been using SmartMedia cards.
CompactFlash cards are both forward and backward compatible -- meaning that the CompactFlash cards sold today will work in digital cameras introduced years in the future and CF cards introduced in coming years will work in today's digital cameras.
Approximately 1.3 million CompactFlash cards were sold worldwide in 1997, according to independent market research firms, and SanDisk was the market leader with approximately 75 percent of all units sold. SanDisk CF cards, sold today at more than 7,000 stores worldwide, are available in capacities ranging from 4 to 48MB. SanDisk CF cards with 64, 80 and 96MB will be available in the first quarter of 1999.
