I assume that some promoter was pushing the stock, which generated the large volume. I also suspect that the people who bought are long term and are holding on, hoping it will come back.

Don't forget that there has to be a seller as well as a buyer. So, if one was interested in pulling off a scheme, all they would have to do is quietly accumulate a lot of the stock cheaply, hype the hell out of it, and dump their cheap shares into the market. This kind of thing happens all the time, which you would know if you had read books like "Secrets of the Street", for example.
