Time Warner to carry CBS's digital signals..........................

CORRECTED - Time Warner to carry CBS digital signals
Reuters Story - December 08, 1998 10:21
Jump to first matched term

In NEW YORK story headlined "Time Warner to carry CBS digital signals" please read second sentence in second para as "Digital television, one form of which is known as the now-emerging High Definition Television, or HDTV,..." (clarifies that HDTV is a subset of digital television and not identical to digital television)

A corrected version follows.

NEW YORK, Dec 8 (Reuters) - CBS Corp. said Tuesday that the digital signals of its television stations will be carried on Time Warner Cable systems, making the agreement the first of its kind between a major cable operator and a television broadcaster.

CBS said that the digital signals of all 14 of its owned television stations will be carried by Time Warner in CBS markets across the nation. Digital television, one form of which is known as the now-emerging High Definition Television, or HDTV, is a new technology that offers clearer pictures and crisper sound than the current analog signal broadcasts.

"If digital television is to flourish, broadcast television and cable companies must work together to make sure that the signal makes it to the people who really count -- our viewers," said Jonathan Klein, President, CBS Television Stations, in a statement.

The agreement also provides a model framework under which local Time Warner Cable systems will carry the digital signals of CBS affiliates which are not owned by the company, should they so desire, CBS said.

Under the agreement, Time Warner Cable, a division of Time Warner Inc., will provide its subscribers with the CBS digital feed in its upgraded areas as soon as it becomes available.

Time Warner Cable also will work cooperatively with CBS to occasionally carry certain special programs such as National Football League games across an entire cable system in HDTV format, including areas not yet upgraded, the company said
