Net stocks lifted by online advertising outlook By Stephanie O'Brien, CBS MarketWatch Last Update: 3:35 PM ET Dec 8, 1998Also: Tech Report NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Internet stocks rose Tuesday, helped higher by a bullish report about growth prospects for online advertising from BancBoston Robertson Stephens analyst Keith Benjamin. Industry analysts project online-advertising spending to reach $6 billion by 2002. Benjamin said investors are starting to see quantified results from online advertising. Benjamin pointed to Excite's (XCIT) MatchLogic unit, its ad targeting and direct marketing subsidiary, as "one of the first tools that enables advertisers to see those results." MatchLogic organizes and analyzes advertising data. The unit, acquired by Excite in February, is profitable and should generate $22 million in 1998 revenue. It's expected to generate revenue of $44 million in 1999, up from $14 million in 1997, Benjamin said. That's good news for Internet companies, whose critics contend that hype, rather than concrete evidence, has been the hallmark of their earnings prospects. cbs.marketwatch.com W
