Hart includes quotes from Jefferson that contradicts Jefferson's own words. Perhaps Jefferson was confused about this issue but later resolved it later in his life and changed his previous writings. Also, Hart includes the actions of Jefferson which speak louder than any philosophical musings- actions which demonstrate the importance of religion in all aspects of life. Surely one can recognize the importance of the Ten Commandments and the words of Jesus Christ as a model for good living, a model of behavior and standards that can be taught to one's children and hopefully modeled by all adults.

The issue then was not to have freedom from religion, but freedom of religion. This implies that the founders were concerned more about government interference and the government dictating to free men and women which religion is preferred and sanctioned by government. Somehow that original intent of clear separation has been completely turned around. What was said in the New Testament about calling things that are evil good and vice-versa? Woe to those....
