Greg, how about a scenario in which ISPs are forced to unbundle their portals and portals are forced to unbundle their ISPs. Maybe ISPs could provide local internet information, similar to local telcos, but you have to pick a "long distance" portal, whether AOL, ATHM, ELNK, etc... Not imaginative, but the type of thing regulators might go for, since it fits the telco model.

i agree: all new data highways provided by a "next" technology are going to become "public" highways. exclusiveness - forget it. this is what makes me hesitate about athm. i think they do a phantastic job and their speed is amazing. but this is based on technology that anybody can have next year. so what, actually, is their usp. what do they produce that no one else can do the same way? since they can't manage to maintain a "closed shop" situation, they are vulnerable.
future market leader? just another great portal?
all depends imo on the speed in building up creative services.then they stay ahead of the pack or become a fat takeover target.
