SIA: GLOBAL CHIP SALES INCREASE 6.2% IN OCTOBERnews.semiconductoronline.com San Jose, Calif.-Dec. 7-FWN--PACED BY A 9% SURGE IN Europe, global semiconductor sales increased 6.2% in October to $10.8 billion, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association's (SIA) monthly Global Sales Report. October's robust sales represent a $635 million increase over September's sales of $10.2 billion and more than a $1 billion jump since August. "Sales increased by more than 5% in all markets," said SIA President George Scalise. "That's a great indicator of the semiconductor market's emerging strength in the fourth quarter." The European market continued to show the strongest sales of the year. In addition to the 9% monthly increase, Europe's semiconductor sales in October 1998 represented a 2% increase over October 1997 sales. The Japanese market, which has been sluggish all year, also showed signs of positive change. Monthly chip sales increased 5.7% in October to $2.14 billion, the highest sales total since April. Monthly sales grew by 5.5% in the Asia-Pacific market and by 5.1% in the Americas market. "October was the industry's best month since January," Scalise said. "Based on the sales growth of the past three months, we anticipate an even stronger November, because it's historically the busiest month of the year." Overall, according to the SIA's most recent global forecast, 1998 chip sales are expected to fall nearly 11% below 1997 sales. October's sales, however, were only 9.4% lower than October of 1997. Japan once again showed the largest year-to-date decline, with sales running 21.8% behind 1997 levels.
