Lewis, since you appear to be very up to speed on this biz and I know next to nothing ( I do think XLNX and ALTR are both terrific companies and have owned them for several years :) ) could you explain what XLNX is up to with their new Internet Reprogrammable Logic product? I understand this to be a chip that when installed in a product (say a printer for example) can be reprogrammed by the purchaser online, thereby updating the products capabilities. Is this correct? If so, it would seem like the potential market would be quite large. Also, does ALTR have a similar product in the pipeline as I have seen no news releases addressing this product niche. Thanks for your help!

lewis, i didn't say everyone was going to compete in fpgas. some will try. however, as asics get cheaper and margins get squeezed, current applications using fpgas will use asics. while asics aren't as good, neither is a 20" tv as good as a 40" tv. however, people buy them. why? cost. if the asic floor drops then xlnx will face substitution competition. it is simply not true that ltr and xlnx live on an island totally isolated from everyone else.

i know that xlnx isn't heavily involved in pcs. however, the #1 correlation for a stock price is the market. if intel cries inventory correction, if the pc box boys build way to much expecting sales that never materialize, if the dram companies ramp production when orders stop, you can bet your bottom dollar that the "shoot 'em all and let god sort 'em out" mentality will hit xlnx and hit them hard.

look at some charts and you'll see plenty of correlation between xlnx and other tech companies - even those not related.

is mu directly related to xlnx? if you looked at the charts you'd think they were darn near the same company.
