British bank to advise
Ottawa on privatizing
Via
Network likely to be split: Several
companies lining up to bid for
parts of rail system

Britain's Hambros Bank, which oversaw the
privatization of British Rail 1992, has been
hired by the federal government produce a
business plank to privatize Via Rail and split it
into three franchised operations.

Sources say several other British groups may
already bee prepared to bid for the proposed
franchises, which will cover Western Canada,
Atlantic Canada, and the Windsor-Quebec City
corridor.

Among the potential bidders are Richard
Branson's Virgin Rail PLC, which operates the
Western region service in Britain; Stage Coach
PLC, which holds the UK's southwest region
franchise; and Montreal-based Bombardier.
