Wow, great post. I just wanted to respond to the first part, working on memory here, from college class on classical literature, the people living in Greece before the Hellenic Greeks invaded had a religion that honored Da, the Great Mother Goddess, DaMater (Demeter) and her consort, PosiDa (Posidon). It was an earth religion. The sacred places were caves, and such. The invaders had a sky religion. So, it wasn't that the ideas changed, it was that the dominant culture changed.
