Personally, I'd say a good part of it has do to with central bankers of the world (and, particularly the U.S. Federal Reserve) insisting on "fighting the last war" (inflation).

The way these things usually work, when we are finally many years into a period of no inflation interspersed with bouts of deflation, and then "everyone knows" you've got to worry about DEflation, THEN you do all of those 1970's kinds of things : buy gold, stupid collectibles, real estate, a warehouse full of copper, etc.
