Both Cable modems and Diesel Modems are unavailable in my City. The Mom and Pop teleco dragged its heals on ISDN waiting for DSL; they saw more profit in ISDN, T-1 and Frame Relay, so guess which way they went. TCI is unlikely to do anything that would require an investment.

No other companies appear likely to challenge either soon.
