John -- "superannuated" is just a fancy way of saying "long in the tooth", alas. :-(

And I do not live in an apartment -- I live in a house, with a basement, and a shed out back. My oldest son and his wife live in an apartment in Brooklyn, and next year I am going to insist they spend New Year's Eve down here with me.

What, exactly, can an apartment-dweller do, especially in New York? I am reminded of President Kennedy's ringing call to the citizens to build their own bomb shelters.

Are you long-in-the-tooth enough to remember that? It cracked me up. I was living in Manhattan at the time, in the Columbia University area. ..Sure, Jack, here I go, with my shovel, right out into the middle of 112th Street, to build my own personal bomb shelter. Out of the way, gas main! Out of the way, water lines! This is my turf, by gum!...

Is it possible that President Clinton will ever find it necessary to make a similar announcement? ...Citizens, time to stuff your apartments with beef jerky and flammable kerosene....hahahahaha..
