PIR & SHRP From Briefing.com: Vermont Teddy Bear Another example is Vermont Teddy Bear (BEAR). Bear skyrocketed on November 19, after issuing an after the market Press Release on Nov. 18, stating that they would be part of the new Yahoo! Shopping mall (YHOO). The stock shot up the next day, on over 4 million shares (BEAR float is 2.6 million shares). But it wasn't news. Yahoo! itself had issued a press release the previous day, before the market, which listed Vermont Teddy Bear as one of the stores within the new shopping mall. Here's a table of the action. Date Event Intraday High Close Price Volume 11-16-98 - 11/16 11/16 15,300 11-17-98 Before Market YHOO PR 1 1/4 15/16 214,600 11-18-98 After Market BEAR PR 1 3/4 1 7/16 577,200 11-19-98 The Big Day 5 5/16 3 1/8 4,618,500 12-08-98 (Yesterday - Three Weeks Later) 1 7/8 1 17/32 28,300 Why was there so much action on November 19, when clearly some people had read the YHOO press release? Could it be people only read the headlines? BEAR's read "Vermont Teddy Bears Featured on New Yahoo! Shopping Site." Yahoo's release had Vermont Teddy Bear buried near the end, along with numerous other vendors. Historically, a press release doesn't usually have much effect generating actual new business. But a well-timed release certainly has a direct effect on stock prices. The fact that a release, by itself, usually doesn't really mean much in terms of actual business revenue seems to have been forgotten. And now, from AP Online, Tuesday, December 08, 1998 at 22:11: Lycos To Open Own Digital Store NEW YORK (AP) - Lycos Inc., which made its name running a Web site that directed consumers to buy products elsewhere on the Internet, will open its own online store tomorrow. The fundamental shift in strategy means that Lycos - not its commerce partners - will be the retailer. The Lycos Store will feature about 4,000 specialty items from companies such as Wine Enthusiast, Pier 1 Imports, Sharper Image and Floris of London. So PIR and SHRP may well see some action if it makes headlines... Thanks, Alien lastshadow
