OK Gang, Time to help out a lurker specify his Dream Machine.
My needs are Internet, spreadsheets, office aps, Quicken etc. Do not game or use other resource intensive programs. This probably means that the Cyrix 166 with 32 meg ram I have is really all I NEED.

My wants however differ and I'd like comments, advice, and also a recommendation of an assembler as I don't know which end of a screwdriver to hold.

Celeron 300a overclocked to 450
128 ram (100 sdram) Should I pay up for Corsair or other?
ABIT BH6 motherboard
10.1GB IBM Deskstar ATA-3 at 7200 Or the 8+/- model?
Video Card Maxtor Mistique G200 or ???
Sound card ??? something cheap as I won't be into 3D
Case and cooling enough for the overclocking heat
US Robotics Internal Sportster V 90 56K
Standard floppy, 32x CD, internal ZIP drive.
Windows 98
May just use my old mouse and keyboard
Would also like recs for a monitor 17 or perhaps 19 not over $450
What am I forgetting?
Hope to have this delivered to my doorstep for <$2000

TIA Don

As I'm getting close to receiving my NT machine from Minotaur I'd like to pickup some sw utility essentials.
PowerQuest Bundle ....thanks whoever mentioned the bundle

NT Resource Kit...what version and where do I get it?

PQ Bundle is a must.

You want the Microsoft NT Worktation 4.0 Resource Kit. You can get it at almost any bookstore.

Diskkeeper is essential as well for NT users. They have a freeware version that will manual defrag. The real version can be scheduled to run automatically and run special boot time defragmentation.

execsoft.com

I bought the server version retailer recently for one of my customers for several hundred dollars off retail.

Workstatione edition is:

1-Pack CD-ROM $44.47 Diskeeper 4.0 for Windows NT Workstation

I just looked it up. The company was McGlen Micro and they Disk Keeper 4.0 for BT WKSTA for $18.81

mcglen.com

Most utilities like Norton and Cybermedic, Nuts and Bolts don't run with NT. Check for specific compatibility. NU for NT always seemed over priced and underfuntioned....

You need some sort of archive manager..

winzip, zipmagic, etc are all good choices....

personally I think this is a good all around replacement for most people as a zip, arj tool etc but essential for anyone....

PowerDesk Exporer 98 from Mijenix...

mijenix.com

While your at it check out. Hypersnap DX from hyperionics.com

I also really like Perfect Screens 3.x Virtual Desktop Manager Software....

softwareutilities.com

McAffee viruscan is also my old faithful for virus checking...

PCAnywhere is also a must for me but probably not that interesting for you. Should defintely check out MS Netmeeting software, Quicken, Quotes Plus, and passwords plus (or some software for storing passwords and stuff.)
