Integer Sorting

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 16, 1998--Tera Computer Company
(Nasdaq:TERA), a Seattle-based supercomputer company, today announced
that its multithreaded architecture (MTA) computer has recorded the
fastest performance ever when running the NASA NAS Parallel Integer
Sort benchmark, Version 2, Class A.
"We ran the unmodified serial version of the Integer Sort
benchmark," said Brian Koblenz, Tera's vice president of software.
"The Tera MTA automatically distributed the work to all of the
processors. We would run a tuned version even faster."
The previously reported record was set by a 256-processor Silicon
Graphics Cray T3E-900 with a time of 0.40 seconds. Tera's
four-processor MTA ran this version of Integer Sort in only 0.27
seconds.
"This result demonstrates once again the clear advantage of MTA
for sorting problems," said Dick Russell, vice president of marketing.
"This is a key indicator of the performance we expect of the MTA on
database applications. We believe potential customers will be very
excited by these results."
"Now that we have built a full bandwidth four-processor network
that meets our expectations, we will be upgrading the two-processor
system at the San Diego Supercomputer Center," added Kathy Rowe, vice
president of manufacturing.
Tera's announcement comes at a time when the company is
scheduling its move to a new corporate headquarters and manufacturing
facility at Merrill Place in historic Pioneer Square in downtown
Seattle, Wash.
