but Cambrian was their crown jewel

Considering NN received a scant $120M (40% of $300M), I'd say your assessment was a little off.

I don't much about the Cambrian product line, or the company, but its obvious that if they sold out so cheaply, to a company that already has DWDM gear, then Cambrian must be just a niche player in DWDM (which itself is a niche market), and hardly what I would call "crown jewels" material.

Peppe, there are lots of vendores selling DWDM technology for metropolitan area ( LU, Cambrian , NTL!).This become more comodity.By selling Cambrian to NTL, NN still have a full access to technology, can incorporate NTL DWDM into NN's ATM,and is not tie up to only Cambrian DWDM.By instaling others vendors(NTL,LU) DWDM over ATM it is easier to sell products which can handle everything.Similary by incorporating MPLS and CSI into 36170 NN standarised thier products before standatdrs are established.Service providers can buy now without worry which technology will be a standard. What they need is to by an appropriate application card from NN.Plus NN have 300 mil.Standards are righ now a very important issue among large service provider.Remember they are going to spend bilions of $ for new networks!

I hope this helps.
