Ztect .. In Canada, it makes no difference how long you hold the stock before you sell it - a day, a year, 10 years. You take 75% of your gain and add that to your income. That overall income determines what tax rate you have - I live in BC, which I believe has the highest combination of Federal & Provincial taxes in the country.

We have Old Age Security which is funded via Federal Taxes. And a Canada Pension Plan which we pay into based on a percentage of income on I believe a maximum of 29,000.Changes are in the works to re-structure both of these in the future and we do have an old age claw back in place.IE if you are over 65 and receive it and are above a certain level indirectly you pay it back in taxes at the end of the year.

We have Social Security. It's included within the Federal Tax.

The easiest way to look at things in Canada is:

Tax on income less than 60,000 is around 39% (including provincial taxes)

Tax on income above 60,000 is aorund 50% (including provincial taxes)

Tax on capital gains is between 37 and 40%

Tax on dividends is around 33%

These taxes do not include sales taxes which average around 15%.

No fun paying all this tax! But we do have very good safety nets, although in the past fewyears, people would argue that its going down hill.
