High-tech leader to hire 200 additional staff

TORONTO (CP) -- Lucent Technologies Canada, a subsidiary of the world's
largest telephone equipment maker, will hire more than 200 people next year
as it consolidates its operations at a new office north of Toronto.
The company made the announcement Tuesday at a construction site in Markham,
Ont.
Its parent, based in Murray Hill, N.J., had originally said the new complex
would employ about 600 people, most of whom would be moved from the
company's operations in suburban Scarborough, east of Toronto.
But company officials said expansion plans would be accelerated in Canada
and 850 would be needed at the new headquarters to get the job done. A
fourth floor will be added to the building to accommodate the growing staff.

The company, which employs about 650 across Canada, has tripled the size of
its workforce and has invested $170 million in Canada since January.
By the end of next year, Lucent hopes to have about 1,000 people on staff in
Canada, said company spokeswoman Valery Vollenweider.
Lucent is trying to capture a bigger chunk of Canada's market as its chief
rival, Canada's Nortel Networks, continues to make inroads in the U.S.
market.
Nortel and Lucent compete head to head in a number of areas, including
telephone switching gear, networking equipment and wireless products.
"Markham is a leading centre for emerging technologies and we are very
pleased Lucent chose this community for its expansion plans," said David
Tsubouchi, Ontario's minister of commercial relations.
