Look at the intra-day chart for Zoom Telephonics (ZOOM). Do you think anyone confused it with today's IPO Xoom.Com (XMCM)? :-)

Hi Suresh. IMO, more often than before, everything is being played through buy and sell programs these days. The object of the game is to have the upper hand and the best way to achieve that is to generate confusion and oscillating intraday pattern.

Regarding banks, I think it could be a combination of Brazil and pre-announcement fear. If you recall, many of the multi-national banks and brokerage stocks pre-announced last quarter. I don't know how rosier their outlook is now vs. then. I think brokerage stocks, earnings-wise, won't recover for another quarter assuming recovery in global economies. There is also some concern regarding Dollar, CRB index, and trade deficit that needs to be looked at more closely.

I wish I had time today to take a detailed look at the earnings history of all 30 DOW stocks. That's the sure way to gauge how those stocks will shape up in the days ahead. That's one reason I didn't want to give Space a quick answer. Somebody needs to do a bottom-up look at these stocks.
