eBay crashes amid software upgrade

Wired

SAN FRANCISCO -- eBay's system took Monday morning off after an attempted software upgrade Sunday night brought the online auctioneer's services crashing down.
As of 11:30 a.m. PST, the system was on its way back, but not yet fully operable.
In trading during the day, eBay Inc stock price was down $10 to $172.
Network engineers were attempting to upgrade software used to manage eBay's data storage system, known as redundant array of independent disks, or RAID system.
"We had practiced this upgrade on another system, and it went without problems," eBay's support staff reported to the user message boards. "However, when we tried it tonight, it promptly ate several gigabytes of data."
Today's system outage follows on the heels of a 3 November incident that closed eBay's trading for two hours, infuriating users who said they lost money when auctions went afoul.
The latest outage has stopped trading nearly six times as long as the previous shutdown. EBay is now entering its twelth hour without service.
Online auctions that were supposed to close during the outage period will be extended for 24 hours, the company said.
Good short sell now?

Scott,

I too use the eBay site to sell and buy items and in the last three days have found some problems. in the past when they had outages they would extend the auctions that were involved, for 24 hrs. Many people want to know what they will do for the auctions that are current and not expiring during the outages. Potential buyers can't view the items while the site is down. From the Home Page you can click on News/Chat and then Announcements to read about the system problems and how they are handling them. The problem this morning seems to have tied up that service also. I too don't have a stock position either long or short yet believe that as soon as one of the wire services gets a hold of and writes a story about the current outage problems, the stock is vulnerable to taking a dive. It's interesting to note that the problems seem to stem from too much business. Echo's of AOL's problems a year or so ago? BTW, this is the longest I've seen them 'down'....
