Russian ice-breaker, Finnish tanker break free
12:39 p.m. Dec 09, 1998 Eastern

PEVEK, Russia, Dec 9 (Reuters) - A nuclear icebreaker
accompanying a Finnish tanker that carried vital supplies to the
isolated Chukotka peninsula near Alaska broke through thick ice on
Wednesday after getting stuck for two days, officials said.

The Sovietsky Soyuz (Soviet Union) icebreaker on Monday sent
out a call for help after the two ships were blocked by ice 15-20
metres (50-65 feet) thick 180 km (110 miles) west of the Arctic port
of Pevek.

They had sought a helicopter to help find the route to thinner ice,
but eventually the icebreaker was able to get through without
assistance, said Nikolai Svityk, a deputy governor of the Arctic
region.

''We talked to them today by satellite communications and they no
longer need the helicopter,'' he said. ''They have already moved 34
km to the west.''

The nuclear icebreaker helped the tanker bring in fuel for regional
power plants, a delivery vital for the region, one of the world's
most isolated corners, to survive the bitter winter.

The ship also ran into very heavy ice late last month on the way to
Pevek and received aerial help in finding a route.
