Actually, the main problem is not the code size of the new compiler technology but the size of the code that it generates. The heuristics can end up generating several different versions of binary for a given block of byte codes, which can take up substantial memory. However, I believe you are correct in saying that the HotSpot technology is not geared towards thin client hardware. It will be best suited on the server-side, which I believe is where Java is more suited anyhow.
